One of Jane Rezac’s favorite lessons is demonstrating how much fat and sugar are in popular snacks. For example, she takes 20-ounce soft drink bottles, has participants read the Nutrition Facts label, then converts grams to teaspoons to show how much sugar they contain.
Then, to make sure participants get the point, Rezac has them measure out the sugar – one teaspoon at a time – so they can see firsthand what they consume.
It’s the same thing with fat. Rezac uses sticks of shortening as a prop to illustrate how much fat fast-food meals contain. With the wad of fat sitting on a plate, Rezac asks, “Who wants to eat that?”
